My DIY Modular

Do MFOS circuits
work at +/-15V?
All of my circuits will work with +/- 15 volts and in all probability, with no changes. All of the chips I recommend are rated for the higher voltages so you should be good to go. One small consequence is that the peak voltage of things will be a bit higher. Oscillator P-to-P outputs will be higher at higher supply voltages and AR or ADSR voltage peaks will be higher also. Filters and amplifiers will have more headroom and may need a bit of re-biasing if you find that the output is not sitting at ground anymore (when the input is at ground). For any circuit to which you want to apply higher voltage examine the schematic and you'll find its not difficult to reduce the output voltage to what you want. If it absolutely, positively has to be there with a different supply voltage; breadboard it, apply the voltage you want, and tweak as necessary.

My Open Source
SDIY Philosophy
Everything on Music From Outer Space is freely available for non-commercial use. Please do not feel obligated to buy pc boards. I provide them for some of my projects so that if you are unable to make them or don't want to make them you can still do the projects. Feel free to make them from the layouts and drawings I provide or design your own if you prefer. This is not my "day job" yet, just a hobby I'm passionate about. I enjoy sharing it with the synth-diy community at large. Please feel free to use the information for non-commercial uses to the fullest extent possible. I do appreciate a link to MFOS if you blog or YouTube your work. Please keep in mind that although I use these circuits in my synth and do my best to update the information with changes or fixes, I recommend reviewing thoroughly and/or breadboarding these designs before relying on them to make sure they meet your needs. Before using any material commercially please inquire via email first.

Thanks, Ray

Bill Fox hosts two shows that feature electronic music. He is interested in hearing the music people make on their home built synths. The best of these compositions may get airplay.

Bill will accept CDs sent to the address below. Bill will NOT send a review to everyone who submits a composition. If you get one great, if not, leave the guy alone. Do not get dissapointed if you don't receive feedback or a review. Never say die and never give up the ship.

If you are into the synth hobby scene this is a "must have" you will be playing with this thing into the wee hours of the morning especially if you built a Sound Lab and don't already have a keyboard controller or you are planning on building a Sound Lab. This thing has added a new dimension to the fun I have with my Sound Lab. My son built one for his Sound Lab and he says he can't put it down.

Go to the Sound Lab Mini-Synth Page

The Sound Lab Mini-Synth is one of the coolest little projects you can build. It is a complete mini analog synthesizer on one PC board. The Sound Lab Mini-Synth from Music From Outer Space has two VCOs, one LFO, one Mixer, one State Variable Low-Pass/Band-Pass Filter, one AR Envelope Generator with repeat, and one VCA. It runs off of two nine volt batteries for a long time due to its low current design. The Sound Lab Mini-Synth can make a myriad of sounds limited only by your vivid imagination. As you can see there are a LOT of people building these all over the planet. I get emails from people telling me how much fun they had building it by themselves or with friends or family. As you can see below the projects turn out as different as the personalities of the people making them.

The Sound Labs just keep on coming...!
Jon Stoski of Vancouver built this for Mike. Garry Larimore's Sound Lab Alex from Russia's Sound Lab Ryan Bocook's Geiger Counter Sound Lab Aaron's totally artistic synapse decorated Sound Lab Mike Walter's Artistic Sound Lab Damion Romero's cool front panel Laurie Biddulph's fully assembled unit. Alan McKerchar's extremely cool portable. Matthias Herrmann's Yellow Submarine Andrew Sharp's fully customized Sound Lab. Ian Salman's Excellent Sound Lab.
People are building Sound Labs all over the place and turning them into works of art! Look at these cool cases. I am just amazed at the neatness and attention to detail these people possess.

Hover over the image to reveal the builder of each respective Sound Lab.

See larger pics of these projects and more in the Photo Gallery.

    But I want a pre-built Sound Lab.
Laurie Biddulph (of Elby Designs) has starting offering a fully assembled and tested Sound Lab in a very nice enclosure. Go to his website http://www.elby-designs.com or email Laurie Biddulph for more information and prices
People are enjoying the Sound Lab Mini-Synth project.

I have built the Minisynth board and connected it to a temporary front panel. Everything seems to be working fine. I have quite a large modular analogue synth, so I understand how the separate sections are connected and how they should function. It is a great compact synth. I connected a CV and Gate from my modulars midi interface to the inputs on the Minisynth and tried it with a keyboard. I have not fitted the 1v/oct scale trimmers yet but with an attenuated keyboard CV I could play about 1 octave with both VCOs almost in tune.

I just finished building my first soundlab minisynth--what an incredible little thing!! There are still many sounds to be discovered!!! Thank you for making these boards and schematics/ directions available!!!!! The end result gives this beginning DIY sound/synth freak a feeling of accomplishment!! So I'm building another!!!

Last Saturday, I used the Sound Lab live for the first time. It's been great showing it off to people, I even brought it to work. During the show I did several Sound Lab solos (where I usually use my Moog), and used it as an intro for 2 songs. After our show was over, our guitarist commented on how I was in my own world during those moments. The response I've gotten from people has been like no other of my other instruments. Everyone asks who I built it for, and gladly I say myself.

    Where did the SchmOnion go?

Click here for the SchmOnion Archive. Well here is the deal. I think we all agree that the Internet is an incredible thing. It allows you to broadcast your thoughts, ramblings, ideas, lets just say ... your stuff ... world wide. I've always wanted to have a comedy show but to do it the traditional way you have to spend years and years on the comedy club circuit. This requires you to adapt your material for that venue, which means remove anything that requires conscious thought, add as many references to genitalia as you possibly can, and do your best imitation of a person with Tourette syndrome (my apologies to Tourette sufferers). I am one of those crazy people who believe that you can make people of all ages laugh without incorporating any of those devices. Bill Cosby did it. Jerry Seinfeld did it. Ray Romano did it. I don't think its magic, funny stuff happens all the time, at home, at work, on the way to work, in the line at the grocery store, ad infinitum. Long story short, I was doing some of my best thinking (at 3:00 AM of course) when I decided to create "The Ray Wilson Show" (hey, what the heck it's my show). So I plan to focus all of my comedic energy there, kind of like a laser beam of humor. Hope you check it out when its up and running. I will pod-cast the whole schmeer too. Let me know what you think.

The Ray Wilson Show" is now on the air. Check out the latest episode.

    Cheers.

The fine print... This website assumes a basic level of electronics proficiency and knowledge. To build the projects found here you must be able to read and understand schematics, relate schematics to physical components, solder, do panel wiring, case building, and troubleshooting. None of these projects has step by step instructions to follow. There are; schematics, circuit descriptions, pc board layouts, suggested panel layouts, and suggested modifications. Please read over any project's information in its entirety before attempting to build it to make sure there is sufficient information for you to succeed. If you are interested in electronics or are just getting started in electronics check out this page for some ideas to help you get going: How Do I Get Started In Electronics?
